The NP needs to understand the different types of treatment options for patients with varying degrees of varicose veins. All patients should be educated regarding lifestyle changes and about their treatment options. The NP is vital in the initial evaluation of patients with suspected varicose veins, especially because some patients may be asymptomatic and may only require the use of conservative management to prevent further worsening and progression of the condition. For patients who are symptomatic, the NP needs to be aware of the initial tests available to diagnose patients and when to refer for more invasive treatment of varicose veins.
