The children in the opening
vignette attend a practicum school of
the Department of Foreign Language
Education of Bogaziçi University
in Istanbul where I am an instructor.
The children’s home language is Turkish. They
are learning English as a second language,
taking 10 to 12 hours of English instruction a
week. Future English teachers (all native Turkish
speakers) observe these classes and teach
English at the school before becoming in-service
teachers. I supervise prospective English teachers
and observe the cooperating teachers’ (mentors)
classes in order to understand how they
