the lord of the manor, or a rich merchant living in a town such as London or Rouen, would probably have had his home built of stone. His house might even have had two floods and several rooms. many manor houses had their living room on the first floor. the ground floor was used as a store. Although there were windows, these were just opening in the wall. They might be covered with oiled linen or canvas which kept out draughts but let in some light. Although glass was used in important churches, it was too expensive for use in people's houses.
