5.1 Methodological Aspects
This present study aimed to explore which body parts accounted for the high prevalence of WMSDs in para-rubber planters and to report the association between WMSD symptoms and work task as well as individual and psychosocial factors.
This study was designed to use a personal interview with a structured questionnaire and physical examination methodology to determine whether the symptoms of WMSDs were associated with para-rubber operation. The participation rate of this study was 95.19% (198 out of 208) which was probably due to the direct interview to the planters. Therefore, the survey method used in this study can be applied to other agricultural survey study as it could result in high rate of participitation. However, this method required more time.
From 198 participants, only 128 had musculoskeletal symptoms within 7 days before physical examination (Table 4.8). However, 115 of them or 89.84% received physical examination. The absent rate (10.16%) from required physical examination was due to some planters had no WMSD on the day of PT evaluation.
The cross-sectional design of this study focused on the prevalence of WMSDs in 9 body parts associated with work task, individual and psychosocial factors among para-rubber planters. In order to be able to compare with other studies, the Standardized Nordic questionnaire was applied for collecting data on musculoskeletal symptoms, including complaints of WMSDs in the “past 12 months”, the “past 7 days” and the “prevented from normal activities during the last 12 months”
The Standardized Nordic questionnaire has been proved to have high reliability and validity (74, 75) and it has been adopted by many researchers to use in their research studies (66, 76-79). Therefore, the prevalence of WMSDs from this study could be compared with other studies that used the same type of questionnaire.
All of the data collecting process was limited to be within 1 week from January 12, 2010 to January 17, 2010. This was to ensure that all respondents were studied in the same period of time.
Most planters in this study were women (52.52%) in the working age (mean age: 45.11 years) (Table 4.1). The education of most para-rubber planters was limited to elementary level. For this reason, many of them had some reading difficulties. This problem was observed during pilot study in which most planters demonstrated poor reading comprehension on many items of the questionnaire. Almost 80% of planters needed the researcher to help in reading or explaining several items in the questionnaire which indicated that an interview using structured questionnaire would be more appropriate than the written one. Moreover, using interviewed questionnaire could create a relaxing and flexible atmosphere which encouraged the planters to open up their ideas (85). In this way, the information obtained from such interview could reflect the real working situation of these para-rubber planters. Before data collection, 5 interviewers practiced interviewing and learned the southern dialect that might be used in the questionnaire.
Regarding the physical examination process of this study, the same group of experienced physical therapists performed all physical examination process. Thus, the result from physical finding obtained from this study is considered to be reliable and valid.
It was evidenced from this study that majority of para-rubber planters performed more than one stage of para-rubber operation. From a total of 198 para-rubber planters, 47 (23.7%) of them performed 2 stages of para-rubber operation while 60 (30.3%) and 70 (35.4%) performed 3 and 4 stages of para-rubber operation, respectively. Thus, for those who worked more than one stage of para-rubber operation (89.4%), biomechanic load from one task could affect the performance of the next task and further increased the likehood of developing WMSDs.
