SEOUL: South Korea on Wednesday (Jul 8) reported its 34th death from the Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), its first fatality in eight days.
There have been no new cases in the country in the past three days and the total number of those with the virus since the first case on May 20 stands at 186, according to the Yonhap News Agency.
Of the 186 diagnosed, 33 remain in hospital with 119 discharged after they recovered, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
First identified in humans in 2012, MERS is caused by a corona virus from the same family as the one that triggered the 2003 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
There is no known cure or vaccine.
