This patchiness was the hardest lesson for me to accept, because it contradicted my original prejudice that the 26Al would be smooth because star formation happens (I imagined) everywhere during any Myr period. Roland Diehl’s own exciting presentation of 26Al from the Orion supernovae of the past Myr was another highlight of this Ringberg meeting, seeming to reveal 26Al in the long hot supernova bubble that extends from the Orion clouds almost to the solar neighborhood. I believe that all aspects of interstellar radioactivity, of extinct radioactivities, of supernova mixing and chemical evolution of the galaxy, all are forever changed by these CGRO observations. And as the Compton spacecraft rests wetly in ‘Davey Jones’ locker’ at the bottom of the sea, we take pride in its many contributions to astrophysics.
