Term Project for Environmental Management and Sustainable Env. Management.
Step 1: Form a group. Your group should contain no more than 6 people. You must get approval from me for your group member list.
Step 2: Select 3 hotels that you would like to research. Rank them from 1-3 and then come to get formal approval from me as to the resort you will research and make a site visit to.
Step 3: Once you have an approved hotel you can begin your research and arrange to conduct a site visit and interview at you selected resort.
There are 3 parts to this project:
Part 1. Conduct research on what an environmental management system (EMS) comprises in the hotel and tourism industry. Write a 3 - 4 page summary on EMS implementation to be included in your final written report and in your in-class presentation.
Part 2. Arrange for and conduct a detailed site visit and interview with the manager or resort representative from the hotel you selected. Some of the questions you might ask would include:
1. Does your operation have a developed EMS? Get all the details about what they do for environmental management to include in the report and presentation. You can include video clips on you visit or pictures in a power point.
Also ask them their opinion on these questions:
2. To what extent are Phuket hotel managers aware of environmental management systems?
3. What environmentally friendly practices are hotel organizations in Phuket implementing?
4. What possible benefits do Phuket hotel managers anticipate or experienced from the adoption and implementation of an EMS?
5. What possible barriers do Phuket hotel managers see to prevent the adoption and implementation of EMS programs?
Part 3. Prepare a written report (7-8 pages) on your findings to be handed into Aj. Rick on Week 15. Make sure to include proper reference citations for all the sources you use in making your report.
Part 4. Prepare an in-class presentation on your findings, at least 10 minutes and no longer than 20 minutes, that you will present for the entire class on Week 15.
For your research on Part 1 you may find some of the links listed on the next page to give you some useful information.
