In these pages we discuss the development and implementation of a kindergarten grade one curriculum in reading where the students, at the end of first grade, are reading at an average grade level equivalent of 3.5, with only a handful of students currently still struggling to read extended text with full comprehension. Typical, of course, at the end of grade one, would be a GLE of 1.9 or 2.0, with about one-third of the students struggling to learn to read extended text.
