Thousands of Malaysians has gathered at the Merdeka Square Monday morning to celebrate Malaysia's Independence Day, a joyful and memorable occasion for the nation, New Straits Times reported.
The public were seen carrying the national flag while some wore patriotic colours such as red and blue as they lined up along the streets hoping to catch the national parade.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor arrived at 7.52am at Dataran Merdeka for the Merdeka celebration themed Malaysia: One Heart, One Soul (Sehati, Sejiwa).
The Merdeka parade began at 8.05am after the arrival of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Haminah.
Among those present were former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, cabinet ministers, and foreign dignitaries.
More than 10,000 people were present at the parade to show their love for the country at the square where the Union flag was taken down replaced with the national flag which is now known as the Jalur Gemilang.
