She was asked to bring him
to the surgery and the receptionist was warned that he
should be immediately directed to a side room, in order
to avoid the risk of infecting others (NICE, 2009). On
examination small ‘Koplik spots’ could be seen on the
buccal mucosa, making a diagnosis of measles almost
certain. Further examination found no signs of any
complications, so that parents were advised to offer
him symptomatic treatment only with an analgesic
and plenty of fluids, and to request further help in the
event of him developing earache, sticky eyes, a more
productive cough, and purulent sputum, and if he
should not follow the expected course of recovery.
