Different strains of zygomycetes such as Mucor species havebeen shown to be suitable microorganisms for ethanol production.Mucor hiemalis is relatively an unexplored strain of filamentousfungi that showed promising results in ethanol production fromdifferent sugars and lignocelluloses hydrolysates. It has someadvantages compared to other microorganisms, such as ability togrow at higher temperature and the utilization of a wide range ofmonosaccharides including pentoses compared to baker’s yeast.Furthermore, the biomass of this fungus contains appreciatedamounts of chitosan that makes it a suitable candidate for variousapplications (Goshadrou et al., 2011; Karimi et al., 2006; Millatiet al., 2005). To our knowledge, no previous work on ethanolproduction from rice straw using M. hiemalis was noticed in theliterature.
