• Health library and information professionals must develop adequate knowledge of the health sciences
environment and content and terminology of the related disciplines.
• There is a low interest in information literacy. The health library and information professionals
must develop this area which is essential for improving services.
• The library and information sciences (LIS) curriculum for health library and information professionals
should be revised to include some of the essential competencies identified in this research.
• Employers, in cooperation with medical library associations, should design and implement continuous
professional development programmes to develop competencies not covered in the curriculum.
