(1) You are making an itinerary for a group Thai tourist to visit the UK, on one night, the group will be spending a night in a remote village, knowing that dinner could be a problem as Thai people in the group might not enjoy British foods, you asked the hotel if there are Chinese or Thai restaurants nearby, to which they said no, it was a very small village, but they have a pub and restaurant in the hotel that serve ‘Asian Food’ and there would be no problem to cater for your group. Great! the group didn’t have to travel further to get to a restaurant, you happily accept and make the arrangements then think no further of this.
Months later upon the visit, after a long day full of sightseeing and a long, tiring bus ride to this new hotel, the members of your tour group were expecting some comfort in familiar dinner, after checking in and retiring to their room, at dinner you were surprised that the ‘Asian Food’ turned out to be Indian-styled curries which was very unfamiliar to your Thai tour group and is the thing they least expect to experience on their visit to ‘England’.
As it turned out, due to many immigrants from the subcontinents (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc.) the people in the UK are very familiar with the South-Asian culture and would call people from the Asian subcontinent just ‘Asian’ and describe anything from there as ‘Asian’. Whereas Thai, or other people for that matter, associate the word ‘Asia’ with the whole continent from Japan to China, to South east Asia like Thailand and Malaysia.
