A learning organization is a large body of aligned individuals, such as a corporation, whose members at all levels spontaneously learn and innovate in ways that promote the well-being and mission of the organization. When a company calls itself a learning organization, some assumptions that it is committed to include: 1. Everyone can be a source of useful ideas. 2. Learning flows up as well as down in the organization. 3. New ideas are valuable. 4. A mistake is simply an opportunity to learn. In a learning organization, the role of training is to support the forces and methods that favor widespread, spontaneous learning. This means that the training function needs to be redefined. The role of training is to support everyone's learning efforts, although the type of support offered depends on the individual's level of responsibility. For example, in working with executives, trainers should urge them to adopt policies that encourage and reward widespread and spontaneous learning. In working with middle managers, trainers should teach them more listening and negotiating skills so that every interaction with other departments becomes an act of learning
