The project is situated in Nazareth, A city located in the northern district of Israel. The main focus is to offer a solution for the social and political tensions taking place in the region between different groups of people. Nazareth has been growing slowly for about two thousand years. It is considered to be the largest Arab city in Israel, as well as one of the most significant places for Christianity within the borders of Israel. A few years after the 1948 war and the establishment of Israel, a new Jewish city was planned on the hills of Nazareth, called Nazareth illit or upper Nazareth, under a bigger project called Judaizing the galilee. In other words- slowing down the growth of Nazareth and other Arab villages surroundings. Around 60 years have passed, Nazareth illit grew rapidly over the years, its area is about 3 times the area of Nazareth and its population is half that of its Arab neighbor, while Nazareth is under-developed with very poor infrastructure and very high density since it hasn’t grew.
Today both cities lie next to each other with a clear highway road acting as a border cutting both sides and separating them. The project sits on the “Left over “ area, right in between both cities and tries to break this linear border and transform it into a spatial realm where different activities can take place for both sides. In addition to a new infrastructure system there is a loop in between the centers of both cities and creates a new metropolitan center that connects it all together – thus the name “The third Layer”
