The predictions of the IRIS model, runway inspector assessments, and friction measurements were compared with the attained braking action of 1261 commercial airplane landings on winter contaminated runways that were fully braking (called a friction limited landing). For these landings, The IRIS model was found to perform better than the assessment by runway inspectors. In 86% of the landings, the IRIS runway model predicted the conditions within ± 1 category of what the airplane experienced compared to 77% achieved by the runway inspectors. The predictions by the friction measurement devices were the least conservative and predicted the conditions within ± 1 category in 61% of the landings. It shows that it can be a real decision support tool that contributes to more accurate reporting of runway surface conditions
