Almost a third of teachers surveyed acknowledged a weakness in either science content knowledge or pedagogical knowledge in science teaching. The New School Model encourages schools to apply more student-centered approaches. However, the public school teachers surveyed here still use teaching strategies that are more consistent with teacher centered approaches. In order to model and ensure a more sustainable change in teacher efficacy and strategies employed, a more classroom based mentor program is better suited, in conjunction with ongoing professional development. Professional development that is delivered consistently with the same cohort of teachers may have greater effectiveness (Penlington,2008). It serves the additional purpose of providing a support network for the teachers involved, as they may teach the same students, as well as share the same resources, curriculum and assessments (Sato, Chung Wei, & Darling-Hammond, 2008).
