Importantly, the personal resources accrued during states of positive emotions are durable. They outlast the transient emotional states that led to their acquisition. By consequence, then, the often incidental effect of experiencing a positive emotion is an increase can be drawn on in subsequent moments and in different emotional states. So, through experiences of positive emotions people transform themselves, becoming more creative, knowledgeable, resilient, socially integrated, and healthy individuals. Figure 9.1 represents these three sequential effects of positive emotions (i.e., broadening, building, transforming) and also suggests that initial experiences of positive emotions produce upward spirals toward further experiences of positive emotions, a point I will return to in a subsequent section.
