One aim of this project was to attempt to transcend institutional, disciplinary, class, language and racial boundaries by facilitating critical dialogue between the students, in which they would be able to examine the concept of "community" in their professional work, as well as their personal and professional identity. In doing so, it would provide students with opportunities for both political consciousness and intellectual reflexivity, through participation in an online "community of practice". Crossing boundaries, such as discipline, race and language, offer an opportunity for learning, particularly when
boundaries diverge and are at tension, exposing participants to alternative ways of thinking (Wenger 2000).
