Reflections on the teaching materials. The number sensesituated
activities used in this study were designed to embed
number sense within realistic situations. However, one of
the activities, which related to the rental of a house, was a
new experience for most students, and the teacher spent a
significant amount of time explaining the meaning of rent.
This supports the statement of Anghileri (2000) that “learning
takes place whenever children reflect on what they are
seeing and hearing” (p. 125). This suggests that the design of
the teaching materials should directly connect with students’
real experiences as much as possible
