Methods of Innovation Diffusion
Diffusion of the guideline recommendations to
clinic providers (n510) occurred through multiple
methods as suggested by Rogers (2003). The plan
included small-group and one-on-one meetings with
the providers and key stakeholders. The content of
the education sessions included review of the literature
and the final clinic-specific evidence-based renal
care recommendations, review of renal health education,
and presentation of preguideline implementation
data. The sessions also included education
regarding use of technology in the form of the electronic
medical record reminder system. The electronic
HIV order sets used in each clinical setting
were modified to include sections on HIV renal
health testing, which listed the clinical laboratory
recommendations to remind providers of the
agreed-upon tests. Finally, a protocol to allow the
registered nurse (RN) providing the renal health
education to order the appropriate renal care lab
testing, if not already in place, was developed and
signed by all clinic providers.
