Generally, mesh gateways have two possible strategies to announce their responsibility for IP addresses via an external routing protocol. First, mesh gateways could advertise their own IP address pools as it is likely that nodes reachable with addresses from this pool are in the proximity of that gateway. If clients are mobile, the overall routing will still work. However, depending on the deployed ad-hoc routing protocol, egress packets may leave the WMN at a different gateway, but ingress packets will still arrive at the mesh gateway responsible for the original address pool. The second possibility would be that a mesh gateway only announces single IP addresses of nodes which are known to be nearest to this gateway. However, this would likely result in frequent routing updates and would require a sophisticated interaction between the ad-hoc routing protocol and the external routing protocol
