Cutting back on potassium
Because the kidneys most efficiently
regulate potassium levels, a patient
whose urinary potassium excretion is
impaired may need to restrict his
potassium intake. Potassium excretion
may be inhibited by medical conditions,
such as diabetes, chronic kidney
disease, severe heart failure, and
adrenal insufficiency. Or impairment
can be caused by drugs, including
angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors,
angiotensin receptor blockers,
and potassium-sparing diuretics
