Few works sold over the next few years and Hopper continued his illustration work. Included in this work were movie posters, thus beginning a long interest in films. Over the next few years, invitations for exhibitions at several small galleries were extended. To these shows Hopper sent his French paintings, but the public was in a mood for more patriotic, nationalistic art and his sales were disappointing.
