As a conservation centre, Zurich Zoo focuses on eco systems and the protection of species. The zoo is involved with international breeding programmes (EEP, ESB) and, if possible, helps find animals for resettlement programmes. Zurich Zoo’s targeted and short-term projects for the protection of endangered eco systems and species are pursued independently or with collaborative partners. In selecting and implementing its projects, Zurich Zoo adheres to the principles of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
The Masoala Rainforest is the centrepiece of the zoo’s strategy. Visitors will delight in an inspirational encounter with the natural world and the zoo’s plants and animals. Why the Masoala?
Madagascar’s animal and plant kingdom is unique. Progressive deforestation of the rainforests places their survival in jeopardy. Madagascar is not only one of the main geographical hotspots for the destruction of the natural environment, but also attracts researchers who try and identify new and sustainable forestry practices.
“In the final analysis, we will only save what we love. We only love what we know. And we only know what we have witnessed with our own eyes.”
Baba Dioum, Senegalese poet
Objectives
The animals at Zurich Zoo are ambassadors for their fellow creatures in their natural habitat. The zoo’s animals and plants enhance visitors’ sensitivity for conservation projects. Exhibitions, guided tours and the available information should deepen visitors’ understanding of conservation initiatives.
The zoo’s efficient use of funding facilitates projects that:
promote greater protection of species in their endemic habitats
conserve areas with natural habitats or help work towards their expansion
foster greater awareness of the practical use of biological analysis of species, and the ecology and science of conservation
promote more political initiatives for environmental issues and
achieve higher quality of life for people living in close proximity to nature via education, training and raising public awareness.
Zurich Zoo is committed over the longer term to its specific nature conservation projects and also supports short-term initiatives.
