A total of five health communication texts were published during the last 10 years. The number of
case studies from developing countries varied widely among the books, with the Handbook of Health
Communication (Thompson, Parrott and Nussbaum 2011) including only one overview article, and
Obregon and Waisbord’s (2012) Handbook of Global Health Communication including 12 case studies.
This finding is not surprising given the global focus of Obregon and Waisbords’ edited book. There was
a wide range of topics in the book chapters, and HIV/AIDS emerged as the most frequently addressed
topic among the case studies. Also important to note is the preponderance of communicable versus
chronic conditions reported in these case studies
