Application of CCS on coal power plants significantly impacts the net
efficiency of the plant. Compiling available energy penalty estimates
from the literature exposes a general w20% reduction. However,
determining an EP value for CCS technology as a whole is inappropriate.
The EP depends on the design of the plant and the chosen capture
approach. There are distinct differences in EP if divided according to
the three main capture options. For pre-combustion, the EP is
18.9 3.9%, for oxy-fuel combustion 21.4 5.3%, and for postcombustion
24.8 7.5%. Analysts should also be aware of a significant
spread within EP estimates for the same technology, for example
post-combustion where published EP estimates range from 10.7% to
39.1%.
