Low maternal Vitamin D levels in rats impair brain
development resulting in large scale structural changes that
resemble those seen in schizophrenia [159,252]. In schizophrenia,
gene polymorphisms have been described in the enzymesresponsible for the synthesis of GSH [253,254]. Such defects in GSH
synthesis may explain the decreased GSH levels found in the prefrontal
cortex from patients with schizophrenia and other psychiatric
diseases such as major depressive disorder and bipolar
disorder
