Jacquard woven fabric is produced on a special weaving loom fitted with a jacquard patterning mechanism. This device enables the individual selection and lifting of any of the warp threads (which run vertically along all fabrics), allowing a wide variety of complex patterns and designs to be produced. Therefore, woven jacquard fabrics are typically multicoloured, or figured with intricate and textural designs. Jacquard woven fabrics can produce a waffle weave effect and other thick and three-dimensional textures that create material that you can ‘sink your fingers into’. A jacquard loom takes all types of fibre and can work with a wide range of weights and qualities; the end uses of this weave type are therefore vast and varied. At URBANARA, we opt for jacquard woven fabric to produce intricate and unique bedding and blanket designs in particular, and use only natural materials for our collections. This weave technique also allows fibres to be double- or triple-woven, helping to build height; because more fibre goes into one square metre, many of our bedspreads and quilt collections feature jacquard woven patterns. The weave is named after the Frenchman Joseph Marie Jacquard who invented the patterning mechanism in 1801.
