Digestion begins in the mouth. The salivary glands secret saliva, which contains enzymes. These enzymes break down starches into sugar. Food is swallowed and passes down the esophagus, which leads from the pharynx to the stomach. The stomach stores food for several hours. The gastric juice contains enzymes which break down proteins.
From the stomach. Semi-liquid food enters the small intestine. Juice from the pancrease, liver, and gall bladder pass in to the small intestine. In the small intestine, the digested food is absorbed into the blood. Waste material pass through the large intestine and are excreted through the anus
