There have been several initiatives to utilize fuel pellets at universities. Missouri State University (NMSU, 2014)
started the use of waste paper for fuel pellet production in the 1990s. In addition to the waste paper generated on campus, the university also accepts waste paper and other biomass from the community partners such as trash haulers, local resident, and companies. The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC, 2014) installed the first university-owned Canadian wood pellet heating system in 2009. The system burns 150 tonnes of pellets per year, leading to a reduction of 140 tonnes CO2-eq. Georgia Southern University (GSU, 2013) opened a pilot pellet mill at its Advanced Materials Development Center in 2013. The mill provides the platform for research and development (R&D) in pellet
manufacturing technologies and its service includes biomass preparation and pretreatment, biomass testing and pellet analysis
