Global warming and spiraling energy prices have added up to
burgeoning energy import bill and putting substantial strain on
the US economy. In the interest of clean environment, strong economy,
and national security, it is imperative to reduce the dependence
on imported crude oil. Wastewaters containing a variety of
organic substrates hold great potential as an energy source. The
microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a promising bio-electrochemical technology,
in which anaerobic bacteria convert chemical energy
stored in wastewater to electricity (Shukla et al., 2004)
