3.4.3 Water Retained after GI Work
Some experts had even extended the speculation to water retained in the ground after the ground improvement work, and explanations are given in later section. Before the construction of the airfield pavements, the areas undergone the ground improvement were filled with water, but the water in the improved areas was drained off during the construction of box culverts in taxiways and drain channels adjacent to the apron areas. This can be easily eliminated from the status of the sand blanket during secondary canal and box culvert construction as shown in Photos 9 and 25, respectively. If the water was retained in the ground throughout pavement construction after ground improvement, then the photographs should show secondary canal and box culvert flooded with water.
