E. Cargo Temperature Increase
Oxidation will generate heater and raise cargo temperature,
high cargo temperature wills accelerate oxidation, generation
of methane gas and carbon monoxide gas, accelerate moisture
volatilization and increase air pressure in side the cargo hold,
so we shall pay attention to cargo temperature. The temperature
of cargo hold varies with below factors in each particular case
of transportation including: the temperature of coal at the time
of loading; atmospheric temperature; seawater temperature; the
measuring position and whether or not the fuel tanks are heated.
The temperature of cargo hold during the early leg of voyage is
greatly influenced by that at the time of loading, later it tends to
be higher than the temperature of seawater or air at 0Υ to
15Υ ,the temperature difference is greater in winter. Some
cargo hold is adjoining to fuel tanker and engine room, the
heating temperature in F.O. service tank may be as high as
100 Υ, the heating may be transmitted to adjoin cargo hold, in
rare cases accidental fires are founded at holds where next to
engine room, so attention should be paid on those cargo holds
which adjoin to F.O. service tank , the F.O. settling tank and
engine room
