In ‘The Language of New Media’ (2001), Lev Manovich spent time developing a very clear description of the differences between montage and compositing in video. In his analysis, compositing tries to disguise the fact that two sequences have been combined together. In montage, the aim is to accentuate differences and create an aesthetic based on juxtaposition. When an artist combines media, they need to be aware that there may be more to be gained from accentuating the two separate sources rather than trying to make them into a seamless whole.
