Hutton's breeding program did produce lines with lower
mimosine , but these (after two backcrosses to l. leucocephala)
did not yield well enough, compared ti the standard cultivars,
to be worthy of commercialisation. Although the mimosine
concentration of the bred lines was about 70% of CV Cunningham, so was the dry
matter yield. The low-mimosine lines still had a mimosine
concentration of abot 4% when actively growing. In this material,
there was evidence of a positive genetic correlation between mimosine concentrarion
and growth rate, illustrating the difficulty of the task
of combining low mimosine with good growth.
