The nuclear family also consists of blended families, single-parent families and foster families. Parents who divorce often remarry. When one both parents bring children from a previous marriage into a second marriage, a blended family is created. The new spouse then becomes a stepparent to the other spouse’s children. If both parents bring children into the blended family, the children of each parent become stepbrothers or stepsisters to the other parent’s children. Some nuclear families have only one parent because of separation, divorce, or death. In case of divorce and separation, the mother is usually given legal custody of younger children, but sometimes children live full-time with the father. If parents are unable to provide the proper care for their children, they may be placed in foster homes. A foster family receives financial help from the government to care for the children until the parents are able to bring them home. If the natural parents remain incapable of providing the necessary care, the children may be adopted by another family.
