After detection of contaminant in the Offpost area in 1974,
numerous studies were performed to define the groundwater
flow system and assess the causes and extend of the contamination.
In order to halt the spread of contaminated
groundwater, the Army and Shell Chemical Company installed
several groundwater barrier systems to block critical
contaminant migration pathways and implement source
control measures. Three of the barrier systems, the North
Boundary Contaminant System, the Northwest Boundary
Contaminant System and the Irondale Boundary Contaminant
System, are installed at the north and western boundaries
of Rocky Mountain Arsenal to prevent Offpost
migration of contaminants
