In NT systems, cover crop rotations (or green manure) are
intended to not only protect the soil surface but also to improve its
physical, chemical, and biological attributes, even at deepedepths, through the effect of roots. This improved soil profile may
increase the efficiency of water and fertilizer use, and distinct crop
rotations, by exploring different soil regions or layers, can
contribute to avoid leaching, balance the soil nutrients, increase
fertility, and improve mineral fertilizer use.
