In response to these concerns, authorities have released several
regulations in order to guarantee market transparency and to protect
consumers against mislabelling and possible health hazards. In the
European Union, Directive 2000/13/EC on the common organization
of the markets in fishery and aquaculture products states that seafood
products must be labeled indicating: (i) the commercial designation
and the scientific name of the species, (ii) the production method
(wild or farmed) and (iii) the geographic origin. Microbiological contamination
in fishery products is ruled by Regulation (EC) 2073/2005.
