It hasn’t quite worked out that way, however, In the last chapter we showed that democracy, thought seemingly triumphant, still faces so many hurdles, pitfall, and problems that in many developing countries its popularity is fading and being undermined. In this chapter we focus more on the economic side, the transition from ISI to free markets, to see how successful that transition has been. We are interested in such questions as whether the transition to free markets is really complete and universal, where it has been successful and where not and why, how it has affected poor countries and their peoples, what the implications of the limits or failures of the current model are, and what alternatives to the prevailing neoliberalism there are – if any.
