Pinion bearing preload is set by tightening the pinion
nut until the desired number of inch-pounds is required
to tum the shaft. Tightening the nut crushes the collapsible
pinion spacer which maintains the desired preload.
Never over tighten and then loosen the pinion nut to reach
the desired torque reading. Tightening and loosening the
pinion nut damages the collapsible spacer. [t must then
be replaced. For the exact procedures and specifications
for bearing preload, refer to the service manual. In correct
bearing preload can cause differential noise. Some cases
use shims to set pinion bearing preload.
