A storm that will eventually bring major snow and travel disruptions to the coastal Northeast will continue to deliver heavy snow over the southern Rockies and High Plains into Thursday.
Snow fell on portions of central and eastern Colorado Tuesday night with 1-3 inches falling in Denver.
The snow was heavier farther south, with widespread reports of more than 6 inches across southeastern Colorado, northeastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle. Through midnight CST Thursday, Amarillo, Texas, had received 11 inches of snow. This smashed the daily record of 4.9 inches set in 1966.
According to AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski, "Amarillo, Texas, has received more than half of their annual average snowfall from this single storm. The city averages about 20 inches of snow per year."
Snow will continue to expand southeastward into more of eastern New Mexico and western Texas into Thursday. Travel will be slippery at times along Interstates 27 and 40 in New Mexico and northern Texas as a result.
