During the last 5 years, neuroscientific research on time perception has focused particularly on the functional mechanisms of interval timing, which refers to durations from seconds to minutes. Neurophysiological findings of functional imaging studies point towards the involvement of thalamo-cortico-striatal circuits being responsible for the diverse aspects of temporal perception (Basso et al., 2003; Buhussi and Meck, 2005; Penney et al., 2005; Mita et al., 2009). Timing and its neural networks are considered to be of great relevance in cognition, as they are related to several other functions such as attention and working memory (Buhussi and Meck, 2005).
