This is of concern because GDM is very prevalent (Ferrara, 2007), although lifestyle factors such as healthy eating, being physically active, and maintaining a healthy weight prior to and during pregnancy may have an impact and play a role in its prevention (Diabetes Australia Vic, 2009). Additionally, a diagnosis of GDM has major implications for a woman’s pregnancy and care management (Enkin et al, 2000), but many women are unaware of its significance (Ferrara, 2007). GDM may also cause a woman’s pregnancy to be considered high risk, which can involve ‘an extensive and expensive programme of tests and interventions’ (Enkin et al, 2000:77).
