Left-behind children are children whose parent(s) have left their villages to work in the city, leaving them behind. According to the 2010 Population Census of China, there are more than 60 million left-behind children, accounting for more than 37.7 per cent of children living in rural areas. Out of these children, around 22 million are old enough to enrol in primary school. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of left-behind children, drawing much public attention to the problems these children face.
