Research has shown that noise levels below 85 dB are usually not associated with ear damage, though they may contribute substantially to distraction and loss of productivity (particularly those in excess of 95 dB). Current OSHA regulations mandate that employers institute a hearing conversation program when employee noise exposures equal or exceed an 8-h time weighted average of 85 dBA. If daily exposure exceed 90 dBA, steps must be taken to reduce exposure either through work scheduling or the institution of engineering controls. Hearing protection is mandated when scheduling or engineering controls fail to reduce exposure below the permissible level. Table 58.5 details the maximum OSHA-permissible exposure to continuous noise at various intensity levels.
