Conversely, introduction of a proactive approach to continual
product environmental improvement through eco-design
which goes beyond mandatory requirement drivers and supports
the philosophy of ISO 14001 [1] was initially viewed
as an EH&S organizational initiative that did not involve the
product development organizations. Changing this view presented
new opportunities and challenges for the Green
Team. Interactions between the Green Team and the hardware
design and development community moved outside the boundaries
of a traditional environmental management system.
These interactions promoted a collaborative technology transfer
and a shift in the ownership of sustainable product design
from the EH&S organization to product development groups.
