Because forensic geneticists have been targeting more and more non-human samples, we believe that it is relevant to understand how these sequences may influence mtDNA analyses in different species. The domestic cat is a particular case where NUMTs are highly prevalent. NUMTs have been reported for the first time in the cat genome [3], and it has been immediately recognized that multiple copies of this long (∼8 kb) NUMT existed, as well as many other NUMTs representing different regions of the mitochondrial genome [4].
