As the assumptions for parametric tests were not met, a nonparametric Mann–Whitney U-test was carried
out to assess whether there were differences in individual subscales between younger (£35 years) and older
(>36 years) participants. Possible relationships between medication omission and total accumulated side effects, and
between medication omission and categorical subscale side effects were further explored with nonparametric Spearman’s
rho correlation analyses (Pallant 2005). The level of statistical significance was defined as P < 0Æ05 and all tests were
two-tailed.
